Summery Taste,,,

The Isle of Man might not be at the top of your list of places of scientific and technological advancement but it just possibly should be, and all down to the efforts of one man - Dr William Okell.

Whilst Marx was busy revolutionising political thinking, Dickens was promoting his "new" book David Copperfield and Darwin was formulating his seminal theories Dr William Okell opened his astonishing Steam Brewery in the Isle of Man.

Moving to a new larger brewery in 1875 designed by Dr Okell himself to cope with the demand from his estate of pubs and it's current home just outside Douglas in 1994 the brewery is now in the very capable hands of the moustached Dr Mike Cowbourne - like myself a proud Yorkshire man!
Known as a brewer of traditional styles Okell's are now producing a variety of speciality beers to compete in new markets with Mac Lir being about the best example. This wheat beer, named after a legendary wizard warrior, was actually more than 6 months in the planning as due to the 1874 purity brewing laws in the Isle of Man allowing only barley, malt, hops, sugar and water to be used in the brewing process a special exemption application had to be passed through the Island parliament, the Tynwald - and boy am I glad it was passed!! This robust and very refreshing wheat beer - using 6 hops in total I think - leads you by the hand through a citrus grove (aroma) to a taste that is probably more likened to a Czech lager or summery ale - this is probably due to the half and half combination of Maris Otter barley malt and malted wheat. It certainly gives many a pilsner a run for its money if not the big guns of the wheat beer world and at 4.4% is a lot more manageable than a lot of it's international cousins - and more to the point since it is served at Weatherspoons you know the price won't bring a tear to you eye.
So then what is stopping you.............why not "leg" it down to your local Wetherspoons to seek this out whilst the weather is still akin to it's summery taste!!
