So, what makes CAMRA so special?
CAMRA stands for Campaign for Real Ale: an independent voluntary organisation which has been campaigning for beer and drinkers’ rights since 1971, with pretty good results, having once been described as the most successful consumer group in Europe.
Quite simply, it has beer at its heart and reckons that consumers have the right to enjoy a good pint, so it aims to:
- protect and improve consumers’ rights
- promote quality, choice and value-for-money
- support pubs as a focus of community life
- campaign for greater appreciation of traditional beers, ciders and perries, as part of our national heritage and culture
- seek improvements in all licensed premises and throughout the brewing industry
Now, as part of that, CAMRA also promotes some pretty great beer festivals of its own and publishes the Good Beer Guide, currently in its 38th edition, detailing UK-wide pubs serving the best real ale. Wetherspoon, incidentally, has more pubs listed in the Good Beer Guide than any other pub company.
Members are also kept updated through CAMRA’s monthly newspaper (What’s Brewing) and its quarterly magazine (Beer), with heaps more members’ stuff on its Web site.
Local CAMRA branches take an active role in their pubs, awarding ‘pub of the season’ and ‘pub of the year’ awards – all designed to highlight ale and make sure that pubs and consumers give it the attention which it deserves.
